When my sister and I came to the decision that we would have to sell our family home on Lake Norman, we knew that it would be a heart-wrenching process. Our parents had built the house in 1968. We had spent our formative teen years in that house. After our mother died in that house and our father remarried, he kept the house for the family’s use. We vacationed at that house for decades. The house was an escape from the difficulties and crises of our adult lives. We found comfort and solace there. Our children developed a strong attachment to the house, where they spent thousands of happy hours. My sister and I met with him and immediately “clicked.” He understood how attached we were — our entire extended families were — to that house and how emotional this life event was for us. He also took charge, advising us in all manner of ways that made our decision to sell our treasure a success. Bill knew the real estate market in the area and helped us with the timing, marketing and pricing of he house. More important, he served as our hands and feet to get things done while we were hundreds of miles away and unable to drop our jobs, families and careers to take care of unexpected real estate issues.           Selecting the right realtor to handle the sale of our Lake Norman home was very important to us. We welcomed Bill Balatow into our home and after an hour or so, my wife and I were convinced Bill was our choice. We gave no consideration to any other realtor, in part because of the excellent resources Tate Realty provided, and in greater measure because of the confidence gained in Bill during our first meeting.          When Bill gave us the price he would use to market the property, we were impressed with his knowledge of the property values of the lake property in our area. The next big thing Bill did for us was to guarantee that he had the people he would need to do everything to make our home as marketable and inviting as possible. He arranged for landscapers, septic tank inspectors, surveyors, home inspection, professional photography, and managed a myriad other details that convinced us we had made the right choice.          All the people Bill engaged to help us were superior in what they did, and how they related to us. It is no exaggeration to say they all became like family. Bill would drop by and head for the refrigerator to get a diet drink, knowing that we wanted him to feel right at home. He did. One day the topic of cleaning behind the refrigerator was mentioned and Bill knew neither my wife nor I had any business trying to do it ourselves. He got the vacuum, moved the refrigerator, and cleaned behind it, disregarding the dress shirt and tie he was wearing!          Another example of Bill’s willingness to go above the call of duty occurred when contentious neighbors fretted to him at great length over the disputed property line that the surveyor had delineated. Bill tactfully withstood their ranting, but furthermore, he had to deal with the irate homeowner who called Bill at home late that same night. He gave me very good advice in how to deal with this issue which I followed to the letter.          The house went on the market on Tuesday. Thirteen showings began on Wednesday. A prospective buyer saw the property on Thursday and made an offer on Friday. By Sunday, we had a signed contract for close to the original asking price. The personal help Bill continued to give lasted even after the closing. I failed to bring the garage opener to closing, and Bill came by our new home to get it the next day.          Throughout the entire time our home was on the market, Bill was always accessible. He made frequent visits and showed us he had an unusual interest in selling our home.
